Police blamed for violating human rights inpornography sweep

WONG: Hong Kong’s League of Social Democrats or LSD, and a group of Internet users were at police headquarters yesterday. They’re protesting against police Internet searches to find pornographic materials stored on Internet users’ computers. Here’s more. STORY: About 20 people were at Hong Kong’s police headquarters yesterday making their voices heard. They believe that police entering personal computers and searching through files to delete pornographic materials is unacceptable. They say privacy and personal rights of freedom are being breached. [Marching Protesters, Hong Kong]: (1st quote) “Police abuse their power! Police director overacts for award!” Police director Deng Kingchan says that keeping a copy of pornographic pictures on computers is a crime. Legislation Councilor Leung Kwok-hung, says keeping such material in personal computers is not illegal according to Hong Kong law. He thinks police are just following orders from the Chinese communist regime. [Leung Kwok-hung, Legislation Councilor]: (2nd quote, male) “It seems like the decision of the residential privacy and personal freedom are decided by the interest of the police director. Therefore the residents could be victimized when he changes his mind with no regard to the law. This could then become a tool to threaten the people.” Eight Internet users have been arrested since last Sunday. NTDTV Hong Kong
