Lincoln further went on to say slaves should have an equal right to liberty, stating “I agree with Judge Douglas he is not my equal in many respects—certainly not in color, perhaps not in moral or intellectual endowment, but in the right to eat the bread, without the leave of anybody else, which his own hand earns, he is my equal and the equal of Judge Douglas, and the equal of every living man.”

Of course, one can split hairs and argue that their *immediate* goal was to stop the spread of slavery into any new territories & states. However, their ultimate goal was quite openly the total abolition of slavery.

You’re right Harry, but Lincoln will still be seen as a republican President, and one of the most famous ones too, especially for the Proclamation Act of 1863. It’s not an insult to Lincoln to call him a republican, because that was his party.

here’s the thing: the republican party of today is not the same as it was back then. you are correct in saying that in the 1860s, republicans wanted to end slavery and democrats wanted to maintain it. however, at some point down the line, the two parties switched stances, with the democratic party becoming more liberal and the republican party becoming more conservative. think about it: why would the first black president be a democrat if a major political reform had not happened at some point? barack obama becoming potus would be the old democratic party’s worst nightmare. stop pretending that republicans are still the party of lincoln. if he was somehow here today, he would be a democrat, because the modern democratic party more closely aligns with his beliefs. at this point, calling him a republican is an insult to lincoln.
The republican party today is more racist than the KKK and there is no evidence the KKK was ever started by the Democrats. They are the protectors of the minorities and the Republicans are responsible for draconian laws that put minorities in prisons from childhood to geriatric.
