Was the Republican Party created to abolish slavery? Is there any evidence supporting this?

Was the Republican Party created to abolish slavery? Yes. The Republican Party was created to abolish slavery. There is much evidence to support this.

Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. What else is needed to prove it?

If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong“, he stated in a now-famous quote. “I can not remember when I did not so think, and feel.[quote]

Meanwhile, Douglas who was his Democratic Party opponent in the debates made many partisan remarks such as Douglas’ accusations that members of the “Black Republican” party were abolitionists, including Lincoln [19] and he cited Lincoln’s House Divided Speech as proof in which he said: “I believe this government cannot endure permanently half Slave and half Free.”

Douglas’s accused members of the “Black Republican” party with being abolitionists, including Lincoln, and he cited as proof Lincoln’s House Divided Speech, in which he said, “I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.”

Douglas directly charged Lincoln with opposing the “Dred Scott” decision because which “deprives the negro of the rights and privileges of citizenship.” Lincoln responded that “the Dred Scott decision” could allow slavery to spread into free states.

Douglas accused Lincoln of wanting to overthrow state laws that excluded Blacks from states such as Illinois, which were popular with the northern Democrats. Lincoln argued that Douglas was ignoring the basic humanity of Blacks.

Lincoln further went on to say slaves should have an equal right to liberty, stating “I agree with Judge Douglas he is not my equal in many respects—certainly not in color, perhaps not in moral or intellectual endowment, but in the right to eat the bread, without the leave of anybody else, which his own hand earns, he is my equal and the equal of Judge Douglas, and the equal of every living man.”

Jack Garbuz, studied History & Political Economy at Brooklyn College said:

The Republican party was founded in 1854. They were actually an anti-slavery party *before* they chose the name “Republican”. (The origin of the Republican Party :: Turning Points in Wisconsin History)

In the 1856 elections, they included in their platform “it becomes our duty to maintain this provision of the Constitution against all attempts to violate it for the purpose of establishing Slavery in the Territories of the United States by positive legislation, prohibiting its existence or extension therein….”. (Republican Platform of 1856)

Of course, one can split hairs and argue that their *immediate* goal was to stop the spread of slavery into any new territories & states. However, their ultimate goal was quite openly the total abolition of slavery.

—- Frank Blissett, Board Operator at Sovereign Communications states:

The Republican Party emerged in 1854 to combat the Kansas Nebraska Act and the expansion of slavery into American territories.

The early Republican Party consisted of African-Americans, northern white Protestants, businessmen, professionals, factory workers, and farmers. The GOP was pro-business, and it supported banks, the gold standard, railroads and high tariffs; the party opposed the expansion of slavery. At its inception, Republican Party had almost no presence in the Southern United States; by 1858, however it had enlisted former Whigs and former Free Soil Democrats to form majorities in nearly every Northern state.
