www.googleconsciousness.com In this talk, Social Media strategists and developers Rome Viharo and Maf Lewis reveal the likelihood that Google’s search algorithm may already be sentient, what it means, and what it represents as a metaphor for collective problem solving. Mentioned are Egypt 2.0, Revolution 2.0, Guillermo Arevalo, Francois Demange, Daniel Dennet, Francis Heylighen, The Shipibo of Peru and Ayahuasca. Wikileaks, Anonymous,Facebook, Wikipedia, 4chan, Reddit, Stumbleupon, Google, Rene Descarte, Dualism, Global Brain movement are also referenced in the talk.
@rcgroot78 these guys are high level thinkers. was einstein great at elementary math? is a professional killer great at keeping girlfriends? give them a break. it gives their ‘article’ tone. if you watch tv, can i say “why don’t you just read the script?”
@rcgroot78 you’re right! Einstein was known for his ability to learn speeches parrot fashion. I heard Newton could say the alphabet backwards and Galileo was an excellent ventriloquist.
@jinkies82 @zzarate Einstein and Newton both used media they were proficient at to convey their ideas. Maf and Rom are not up to par compared to other TED speakers. Hence my suggestion for a more traditional means, which already is pervasive in the talk, to better explain their ideas.
they’re not mic’d up, and also he’s reading his entire speech to us from a book. i’d rather just read the speech myself than have to listen to this extremely boring-sounding person stumble over his own words for 10 minutes before getting to the point… TED talks are usually much better quality than this
@svendiamond you are so charming and everyone loves your new haircut.
@svendiamond – I heard there was going to be a parade in your honor! All your family and your whole neighborhood was going to turn out and sing a special song about you – then they all got together and decided that they would just write it down and post it to you… it goes a little like this…
We love Matt,
He loves beats,
He’s got a new haircut and it’s better than most,
We all think his opinions are so very important!
Please share them with us soooooome moooooooore!
Love,
your fans!
@jinkies82 lol thanks?
When it come to TED, concept is everything. I’m interested in outstanding ideas, not sales presentations – this is a BIG win.
i think the presentation was extremely weak. 2 people running around talking idiocy
so the question is. is consciousness winning, or bi-winning?
“Look at me, I’m talking!”
the ideas themselves are nothing new though (but for some people they can seem new, of course)
@svendiamond totally agree ;)
I had to skip the first several minutes – they were so badly performed it was impossible to keep with the talk (disclaimer: my talks are even worse) Later, they basically verbalize my own ideas so the presentation becomes interesting.
@m1ndwrapper – sorry your English isn’t so good. But I’m glad you took credit for all the ideas… where would we be without you?
@JJJoseyhead my message was not intended to take credit for any idea (even if I deserve it :D) but just to prevent yet another narcissist/capitalist ass from taking an “ownership” for the ideas anyone could think (or talked before) about. Sorry I’m not going to worship these guys each time I think on similar topics.
@m1ndwrapper – ahhh…sorry if you or anyone feels we are trying to steal your thunder – to us it’s just a metaphor to talk about collective intelligence and where it could lead in the very near future. If your work also is along similar lines, share a link or two and I will post it up on the site.
@Rome
” to us it’s just a metaphor to talk about collective intelligence and where it could lead in the very near future”
ah yes, yes… lol
@m1ndwrapper – explain? I’m trying to assume your not being condescending but it’s really difficult giving you the benefit of the doubt. perhaps there is something you would like to address directly?
Don’t flatter yourself google… The internet as a whole could be thought of as a singular conscious being much like the brain. The reason I think its like this is because its ran and used by conscious entities (Humans). So its not so much the internet being conscious its more about a collective intelligence of human beings. It’s like the beginning of a hive-mind. Wake me up when you connect two human brains as a singular entity to the point of thoughts being valid communication.
The idea of a country is an obsolete idea, lets look to be “post political” and Anonymous.
Icelands citizens are building their new constitution through Facebook.
The net facilitated this open spread of ideas and social media is a significant component of the general intellectual movement now going on, but I’m not convinced it can play a central role in any subsequent reorganisation of society. Things online happen fast; conflict resolution by ordinary citizens on Wikipedia would be a step in the direction of the entire world deciding to start a more sane society based on cooperation; if we choose to we can make government, money and borders irrelevant.
Great video. Google is what I’d call pre-, or proto-conscious.
Also, I recommend video’s by Clay Shirky.
well word! sweet insight! and its a very hopefull discovery as well! thank You Rome! :)

Brilliant ideas…Unfortunately, I’m not sure that it continued to translate into the amelioration of the situation in Egypt, but amazing stuff nevertheless!
Not google is conscious, but google is conscious of what is going on on the internet.
Doesn’t sound so impressive then does it?
