— My podcast (unrelated): www.clickcaster.com On November 21, 2007, three Halifax Regional Police Officers: Const. Jonathan Edwards, Special Officer Greg mccormick, and Const. Ben Mitchell, were involved in an altercation with 45 year-old Howard Hyde, an unarmed diagnosed schizophrenic, in a booking room of a Halifax police station. The officers were all over six feet tall and over 200 pounds, while Mr. Hyde was five foot eight and overweight. Instead of restraining him with physical force which could have been done relatively easily, a Taser was deployed several times eventually leading to Mr. Hyde’s death 30 hours later. One of the officers, believed to be mccormick, can be heard taunting Mr. Hyde, “You’re gonna be doing the fucking dance there, Howard,” moments before a Taser is deployed for the first time. None of the officers were ever charged or disciplined for their actions. As citizens of Halifax, or anywhere for that matter, we cannot tolerate this injustice, and must make sure everything is done to make sure this sort of tragedy never happens again.
