I suspect that these types of incident are escalated by the police to show that they are ‘needed’ in a time of budget cutting. They obviously had arranged for the ‘human resources’ to be available so it would have been a wasted opportunity had nothing happened.

@shardi2209 – The only reason this happened is because the Riot Squad turned up.. if the bobbies that were so nicely policing the event earlier in the evening had simply gone home, everything would have continued peacefully and then dissipated. Just speaking as someone who was actually there.

Say they had gone home and it hadn’t dissipated, who do you think would get all the shit? That’s right, the coppers. They are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. The peaceful protestors would have been fine but it’s very clear that a lot of people that were still there later in the evening were just looking for an excuse to kick off. Police being there doesn’t explain why things were smashed, bins were set fire to. It’s not a logical or valid explanation for their behaviour.
How would the genuine residents of stokes croft have felt if no police had come? They would have felt like the coppers couldn’t give a shit as it’s “only” stokes croft. Speaking as someone who chose to stay out of it and not make things worse. Oh and as someone who has to help certain groups of people in stokes croft when others wouldn’t.
This is fuck all compared to the illegal, unofficial, facebook organised, 7000 strong street party in Glasgow on Friday, in Kelvingrove park, now THAT was a fucking riot. This is childsplay.
