I hope that someday you lose your house, or your job, and are thrown out of your apartment. I hope you have no choice but to move into one of these areas because mommy, daddy, or one of your lovers or friends can’t help you. And then I hope one of these meth addicts tries to rob you or invade your apartment, while the police take their sweet time getting to you.
And then I hope by the time they do, as is always the case in these places, you have already lost everything valuable to you. This way you can realize that there ARE people in these rundown areas who are trying to do something with their lives, but run into problems of the area all the time, while police either do nothing about it, or just exacerbate the situation. Forget college kids. You can, with a high school diploma and a short police academy stint have the power of a god over other people and make huge amounts of money with lots of perks in the process. The median salary for a Los Angeles Police Officer is about $94,000 a year now. Don’t bother with all that very difficult education and then a life being exploited by multinational corporations creating profit for our society when you can can be a highly paid god in short order. Cycles of poverty are caused by desiring “22’s and 150.00 shoes.” It has nothing to do with racism both current, and past that has lead to african americans living in ghettos, unable to escape because no one offering decent money will hire them, because they go to schools that are terrible and have been neglected in order to be that way. peppy, you’re ignoring the reason why there are black ghettos: they weren’t allowed to live elsewhere, and they were not allowed access to decent jobs. this area they’re in, it used to be the japanese area, and during the 40s, when blacks were migrating to work for the war effort, they were crammed into the (then empty) ethnic neighborhood. there’s no need for generalizations — l.a. skid row is the product of government racism.
while i kind of agree with joyness, l.a. skid row isn’t just some place where people end up at random. a lot of drunks, people with mental health problems, and cons are released into the area. some neighboring communities police departments “dump” people in skid row. it’s against the law, but the police definitely do it, and they’ve been caught on tape. skid row isn’t random – it’s not planned – it’s the place where custom dictates is the place to make people “disappear” from society. l.a.!
