How widespread is corruption in India? Why is it on the increase? What is the best way of tackling corruption in India? I asked these questions to a Retired Senior Police Officer who, while in service, was well known for his uncompromising stand against corruption. Hear his views here.
Colonel, Pakistanis seem to suffer from a sort of collective self-delusion that makes them see their Islamic paradise (i.e., Pakistan) as India’s equal. But the fact remains that, as Mr Azad put it, Pakistan is only roughly equal to Bangladesh and they are both roughly equal to India’s Uttar Pradesh.
Please do not forget that we are discussing Indian corruption here. Isn’t Pakistan totally irrelevant to that discussion?
The whole world knows that Bangladesh is equal to Pakistan. I don’t know why Mr Jinnah disagrees with that?
I agree with the Begum. Pakistanis tend to forget their limitations – they are just a middle-sized country, roughly the same size as Bangladesh. For them to pretend otherwise will invite only ridicule from the wider world community.
This video is about fighting corruption in India. Why are we discussing Pakistan here? Let Pakistan go to hell! Let us discuss how to fight our growing corruption.
Pakistan is irrelevant to our discussion here – I agree.
Pakistan is crap, if you ask me. India represents the future. Let us build a corruption-free society in India.
beg to differ. we are worse in India
jforjayanth, India is worse than Pakistan? In what way, my friend? As far as corruption is concerned, all available research shows that Pakistan is definitely worse. That does not mean that we in India should become complacent. We must strive for a corruption-free India.
Recently I had the privilege of going to a district court….there was a bull standing and peeing on the fourth floor. Inside the courtroom the *moharrir* demanded money from me. The judge was sitting right next to him. When I asked him why, he said he had to purchase vegetables for the sahib, in the evening. There is no hope for this country, if we dispense justice in this fashion.
liveatknp, If that is true, it is aweful! Obviously, corruption has entered deep into India’s vital segments.
Nowhere in the world has corruption disappeared by itself. Where it has all but disappeared, fierce battle had to be waged against it. That battle has to begin in ernest in India at the earliest if corruption is to be cornered and defeated.
India can win this war but not without a fierce and uncompromising fight. Has India got what it takes? Personally, I think it has.
Forget justice, even the financial markets are rigged. Most of the companies manage their accounting statements and the auditors are hand in glove. This is a country where you have to pay a bribe, even to get a tax refund, or to get a passport verification, et al.
tnt2, Things are pretty bad in India, no one denies.
Recently, I was on holiday in Nigeria. There I met a man who told me that he will not take his beautiful wife out for fear that the local cops may ask for sexual favours from her!
I point this out just to show that India is not yet the most corrupt country in the world. The fact that we have a police officer here to advise about the best way to fight corruption agurs well for India’s future.
India will one day be corruption-free, I am sure.
c’mon…please dont compare with nigeria.
I personally believe in such matters India is even better than US.
In US, they dont call it corruption, they call it lobbying.
We’re not sure what went wrong in india, it’s corrupted in most cities, but least in towns and mandals. wherever I go I get to pay high price comparing to other people just because I look like a foreigner? and also colleges in india is very horrible and in very bad shape, these bastard people should be punished.
rohit.. Mr Nambiar tells us what went wrong. Politicians came along and started using the Police and the bureaucracy for their own ends. The Police and other government officials are obliged to obey their corrupt political masters. That is what has gone wrong.
eradicating CORRUTION is NOT a simple task that can be completed by discussing in a forum. Definitely it can be the first step. First of we need the courage to go out there & expose that corruption & be successful in that attempt. We must have the help of the people around us. And NOT the INDIFFERENT attitude of “what difference can it make?”. Even a small difference is “A DIFFERENCE.”
the country needs the energies of all its citizens to be channelised for this fruitful purpose. We must have the grit to refuse CORRUPTION. ” will I take that bribe if I was in his place? ” . Question yourself. And say “NO”. Thats when YOU become INCORRUPTIBLE. Now we can try to UNCORRUPT the SYSTEM.
it is the spirit & energy to fight against this socio econo moral evil AMIDST OUR DAILY LIVES that is a challenge. Especially with the pertinent question ” Why am I doing this when those who should check this are scott free? ” ” Am I the only spirited citizen around ” ” What if after all these hassles the cause is lost? “. the ONLY ANSWER is ” are you too waiting to be corrupted? “
th1nkl0ngt3rm,
Dont you agree with Mr Nambiar that no fight against corruption will succeed unless it starts with our politicians?
What we need is the political will to fight corruption tooth and nail at every level. We have to make corruption socially and administratively unacceptable. Once we have that, then we will get political parties and political leaders who will follow policies of ‘zero tolerance’ towards corruption.
Rooting out corruption has to be on everyones agenda first.

rck5054,
Kannur people are very tough people. They don’t fear anybody.
I recently bribed a cop to get my passport processed faster. I was really ashamed of this and wanted to change my habits. Initially, I really didn’t know how I can make a difference. I asked myself, Can I really stop corruption? I started asking my friends and colleagues for suggestions. Thats when a friend suggested that I register myself on JaagoRe since the website has a database of NGOs. I immediately did that, and have even started working on a project.Ive never felt so proud of myself.
