By the 4th century, the Christianity in existence (Catholicism) had more than enough pagan beliefs and practices in its system. economics even teaches an “optimal tax rate” concept stating that at the right rate (not too high like now) tax receipts will actually increase. this happens because in a low-tax environment entrepreneurs get encouraged to do their thing and as a result more money actually gets collected..much less painfully too. @solarDeviant Ignatius of Antioch, Clement of Rome and Polycarp of Smyrna were apostolic fathers who were disciples of the Apostles. They were Catholics who believed in in Catholic doctrines. You would have no New Testament were it not for the Catholic Church who compiled it.

You are correct that the Catholics were the early and original Christians, but you are incorrect in saying that they apostatized. Some individuals did apostatize or become heretics, but the Catholic Church as the institution founded by Christ, was promised by him that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it, which means it will exist preserved from error until the end of time.
