This is regarding to Doug Bahl’s experience with police brutality. To receive free visor cards, go to this website: www.hearinglosshelp.com and look for “Free Visor Cards” There are two versions, Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This video is dedicated to Doug Bahl.
I agree with you. A wonderful explanation! I was thinking of that earlier today. Will make a simple card “2 x “4 with a big bold DEAF – of course I will type up and laminate too — read back -contact for Interpreter at MCDHH or blah blah. Visor is the best place to put! Don’t use the glove compartment otherwise they may think you are getting a weapon. I feel sorry for Bahl but I hope he is well. Beaten by the cops is unacceptable. Some cops react differently I guess.
I agreed with you. I used to have a Deaf ID Card to show the RCMP after I ran through the three way stop at two am in a small town in Alberta. I didn’t see RCMP. He turned light flashing on and I stopped car and wait for me to com. I showed the ID Driver plus Deaf ID. He read it and mouthed me quite clear. One thing he didn’t see my hearing aids. By the time he letting me go. I decided to wait and listen. Sure enough he say F**** Deaf Driver. It was loud and clear.
Wow… that is scary!
Good point DSQ!
I will find a good place to put this visor card. Best if you use cardstock paper to print it out…more sturdy that way.
Smile .. ;)
but who control ADA Law???
Good question!!
I don’t need a placard to tell others I’m Deaf. You forget to ask for policeman’s name and badge number.
That’s true. When you get a ticket for being pulled off, you would get the policeman’s name and the badge number. If not, you can jot down the name and number with your pen. Whatever works for each driver. The whole point of this videotape is to give the driver the chance to remember remain calm and cooperative. That’s all.
I hope more help deaf good place. You are great! Thank you post.
How I can get Visior card? I remeber u will provide website address to download it and print out. Pls let me know
There’s the link next to the video on the right… click “more info” and you will see the website address above. If can’t, let me know and I’ll post it again here.
When I get pulled over for whatever reason, I turn off the engine, open the window and smile as the officer approach. Then I try to speak slow and clear, saying like this “Hi. I need to let you know something; I am deaf, and I can’t read lips well. Can we write?” That usually works beautifully for me, and I can’t really say I had any bad experiences with cop when I do this. Anyway I have one of these visors also, for these cops who find my voice impossible to understand. Awesome video.
There you go! Exactly what we all should do!
Could you repost with subtitles for limited or non asl speakers?
I would LOVE to but I don’t know how to do that. :( Know anyone who could do it for me?
My friend who is HOH was almost shot by a cop who had pulled him over. My friend got out of his car and was trying to tell the cop he was HOH so he couldn’t understand what the cop was telling him to do. The cop must have felt threatened because he drew his gun and pointed it at my friend. Finally the cop understood and let my friend go. Very scary.
