Diplomacy _must_ defer to the right of democratic citizens to be informed. If your diplomatic discussion can’t stand the light of day, we citizens are willing (and able; diplomats don’t fight wars) to risk that it fails. The alternative, trusting that what power brokers say behind closed doors is in the interest of the people, is no longer tenable. Zuckerberg is a schmuck, but he’s right: privacy is no longer a social norm. Government has to adapt to the new reality, just like the rest of us.
They hypocrisy on display is vexing. Canadian and American governments (among many others) infringe more and more on the privacy rights of citizens, but the release of a smattering of information to the public is cause for wailing and moaning? The public can’t “handle” it? I don’t normally wail about political and media elitism, but when the shoe fits….
Main stream media which has been bought out by the Corp Elite or one can call them Corp Crooks. They are tell them what they can or can not say to the public. Give me a break people, public has wright to know what our government are doing, so then we can determine who to kick out and who to keep in. All this word games these woman talk about, mean so little. I am glad that wikileaks leak out those document. That is real journalism and not the one we see today,
Matt Who?Heather wake up.no one in europe know who matt is. wikileaks is in every
news tv or news paper . free informacion for all. wikileaks rules!
The entire panel are imbecile and talking heads not worth 2 squirts. Maybe if there “diplomats” would not be such hypocrites and better spoken that some of the cables would not appear so lowbrow. It just echoes the popular belief of flawed US foreign policy, Assange deserves a medal and this panel should be fired for idiotic regurgitation of main stream media.
Strange no positive people on the panel you have presented 3 negative heads, are they there for the White House …Damage control…?????? Yeah encourage the public to see it your way, control the web and their heads.
Points to Gareth for effort :)
What you fail or just don’t want to realized is that young people of these last generations have nothing to do with the beliefs of old(est) generations like the ones in your panel. For your people is simple: TRUTH FIRST AND FOREMOST…AND F**K DIPLOMACY!!!
If none of these leaks contain new information as you say, what is everyone so upset about? You can’t speak out of both sides of your mouth people! Further, Diplomacy works when there is trust, if people lied, GET RID OF THEM, and put trustworthy and people with integrity in charge of diplomatic relations. Mainstream Media we are so horribly TIRED of all your biases and lies – take a page from Wikileaks – Report what you want, but LINK to the RAW data – *THAT* is what journalism should be!
My position is that Assange should be extradited to the U.S. to face prosecution as an “accomplice to espionage”.
This haphazard releasing of cables has at least “thrown sand in the gears” of diplomacy, probably has endangered innocent lives, and quite possibly could cause an increase in the chance of military solutions having to be used.
Assange and Wikileaks have a lot to answer for, but it should be answered for in the American justice system. It should go all the way to SCOTUS.
All of a sudden Janice Stein is my hero on this panel.
I don’t always agree with her (with respect for her knowledge), but on this Wikileaks topic I love how strong, and forceful she is being. This whole panel is pretty good actually (Heather Hurlbert especially).
Well done again Mr. Paikin and folks at “The Agenda”. Keep up the fantastic work that you do. It is appriciated, if not always articulated.
Heather closes strong with the gossip line.
I think I hear Janice whispering it right after in the backround, as if in agreement that that is the best word to sum up what the media has done, with the Wikileaks info.
What a great tag-team. Great job again having them on Agenda.
Keep it real, and Realpolitik.
What kind of poverty in thinking forces people to assume that free speech advocates would prefer diplomacy to war? Why is WikiLeaks being talked about in a frame of free speech or democracy at all? It’s not as if any government anywhere has a God-given right to secrecy. Why try to sanitize it and make it safe for liberal democracy, as if preventing the US’s ability to keep secrets must serve some grand, ethical or constitutional purpose? It is enough that the US is not owed this.
::::〠PLZ 】::: search for … Dr. Tom Flanagan’s immediate expulsion from University of Calgary ON YOUTUBE ! and watch the clip and PLZ sign the petition ! Dr. Tom Flanagan called for the assassination of Mr.Julian Assange, the Founder of the Wikileaks website ! We, signatories of this petition, demand Dr. Flanagon’s immediate expulsion from University of Calgary. Thank you !
@GrifterUno Amen brother.
So wiki leaks introduced gossip and cherry picking to journalism? Really they gloss over one important point about the choice of leaking this information. The people do need to have an informed view on the backroom deals and brokering that is going on in their democratically elected offices. These leaks offer a brief window in this process and if these people can’t take the heat of their office, get out of the house.
Why is secrecy important for diplomacy? Please explain this to me, maybe I’m just a moron but I don’t quite see it. The only case in which it would make sense for diplomatic relations to be kept secret is when one or both of the nations involved are acting against the interests of their own citizens.

I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.
These people are talking with the MISTAKEN assumption that people do not have the ability to think critically.
Wikileaks is the revolution of 2010.
Governments have no right to lie to their citizens – even if it makes their work a little bit more difficult.
Secret diplomacy gave us WW1 and the Kuwait Invasion 1991 with the consequences of WW2 and the mess in Iraq+Afghanistan. Learn about it. Secret diplomacy is evil and done for evil reasons.
If politicians behaved properly and did what the people elected them to do. then there would be no need for Wikileaks but thats too easy and there are no millions to be had in being a proper polititician. As far as secrecy, lets put it to public vote and see where that goes, the same for political donations, ear marks, adendums, amendments, taxes and the popular vote.
Wikileaks is the ‘unofficial’ front, for elite’s / gov’t’s desired leaks.
Simple really.
All the best to ye who think otherwise.. Bless.
This is pathetic.
You keep talking about these various vips like they are credible.
Fucking idiots.
Let’s quit talking about this freak and that diseased creature and talk about children being cut down by .30cal machine guns.
Let’s have a nice conversation about those who live where the bombs that missed landed and see what they say!
Oh, wait…no…they’re all dead….
Really this political wahwah such as this video is an inexcusable waste of time.
