Part of the issue with the 407 that I’m pointing out, is you have no way ofg knowing whether the system is working or not. Because of that, the OPP should not be issuing citations for something that is the fault of the 407 system.
I may be wrong, or doesn’t apply on trucks (I don’t drive my rig near Toronto) but I know this is how it works with our small vehicles on commercial transponders.
The Transponder does not register when entering the 407… its not meant to.
**Personal Vehicles Do not need Transponders to use 407**
Billing is done by Photo verification of Licence info when entering & exiting the 407. The transponder is only registered upon exit of the 407, and associated with the corresponding licence photo information. Normally there is a “Video toll fee” along with the “mileage fee” (distance traveled) for using the 407. Having a transponder eliminates the Video toll fee, as it allows them to bill directly to registered owner of the transponder.
Commercial vehicles are required to have transponders for fleet billing purposes, as well as a way of monitoring heavy vehicle use.
*** Rear Licence Plate information Must be Viewable to the photo system ***
If the ETR people are saying that they know when you got off the 407, but not on… It is most likely due to the fact that the rear licence plate is not easily viewable to the cameras…. so they cant register you getting on the 407, but the Transponder lets them register you getting off.
So they need to get better cameras… or change transponders to register ON & OFF the 407, and not just broadcast Billing Information.
