The public today has a dismally poor science education. (the school dumb-down) Nye’s 1st elementary demonstration, done poorly, no weighing scales, describes Archimedes buoyancy principle, displacement of water.
His second description is Pascal’s hydraulic principle. It would be better if he used bubbles to visualize the flow pressure but he did a real half-way demo. Corporate TV will tell you just enough to twiddle your mind and satisfy, but never enough to cause you not to shop and buy.

BP’s deep earth drilling was very risky and they already drilled deeper than they had permission to drill.
After the accident, massive damage and public disapproval, its perfectly reasonable to expect that BP would not be allowed to drill there again.
Thats why they didn’t cap the pipe.
If they allow it to keep leaking dangerously, they can drill more without any public/government resistance.
Once they’re pumping oil adjacently, they will cap leaking pipe.
Simple.
