child forms his opinions and beliefs by observing the relationship between the two people who have given him life i.e. his parents. This relationship is the mirror in which child sees what life is all about. No other realities or possibilities exist for him because this is the first and closest relationship he grows up looking at. Thus, his personality also takes the shape accordingly.
Children who grow up in a happy atmosphere develop happy cheerful personalities and have a positive attitude towards life. And children who often have to go through the trauma of quarrels or experience tensions between parents, suffer from low self-esteem and lack confidence.
Parents are a child’s whole world. This world is shaken and is filled with insecurity when children observe tensions between parents. This way, children also lose faith and respect for parents. They stop believing in relationships and are apprehensive to enter long term relationships. Their view of a relationship is distorted wherein they begin to believe that this is how most relationships end into. It’s not their fault if they don’t believe in the power of love, they never saw one. They may even become violent or aggressive or withdraw themselves completely resulting in a shy, quiet child who doesn’t feel like or is afraid to express. Children may also become fearful and usually feel shameful of the situation at home.
Such is the huge cost a child pays for the strained relationship between parents. And this does irreparable damage to his psyche. No amount of love or visits to psychologists later on can then erase the scars on the delicate mind of a child.
So, resolve your misunderstandings in private. Don’t cling on to them. Talk out your differences. They are too small in front of your child’s happiness and that is what you want at the end of the day.
They say the best gift a father can give to his child is love his mother. And the best gift parents can give their child is love each other so that his life is full of happiness, and he nurses the desire and the hope to find love in life.
