Previously unseen images showing what appears to be prisoner abuse on the part of U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have been revealed by an Australian television station, SBS which reportedly acquired them following the Abu Ghraib scandal in 2006.
The shocking images of inmates in Iraq and Afghanistan were published just a day after the US president announced plans for a legal battle stop them ever being seen.
El Presidente’ Barak Obama previously committed to allowing thousands of images to be published but changed his mind after senior generals warned that their publication could place US troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in greater danger
The president’s change of heart brought bitter criticism from left wingers and the American Civil Liberties Union, which had brought a freedom of information case against the US government applying to see the pictures
Pledging to fight the case all the way to the Supreme Court, the ACLU accused him of betraying his principles of open government and “complicity in covering up” the “commission of torture by the Bush administration”.
The White House legal team is preparing for a June 9 deadline to present its case that it would be against the interests of national security to make these pictures public.
Further controversy comes with the revelation that the administration is considering detaining terror suspects from Guantanamo Bay indefinitely and without trial on US soil.
Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator, said after meeting White House lawyers that there is a new national security court which has the power to jail some terror suspects permanently and without trial or representation if they feel the prisoner is too dangerous.
One Defense Department specialist recalled seeing pink blotches on detainees’ clothing as well as red welts on their bodies.
Marks he learned later were inflicted by soldiers who used detainees as targets and called themselves the High Five Paintball Club.
As an expert witness in the defense of an Abu Ghraib guard who was court-marshaled, psychologist Philip Zimbardo had access to many of the images of abuse that were taken by the guards themselves. For a presentation at the TED conference in Monterey, California, Zimbardo assembled some of these pictures seen below into a short video.

Among the shots: A picture of a soldier and four nearly naked detainees, one of whom has the words “I’M A RAPEIST” [sic] written on his buttocks; a picture of a prisoner cowering while surrounded by dogs and soldiers with guns; a picture of a naked man with an unidentified white liquid coming out of his mouth; a shot of a naked detainee with eight large red welts slightly above his buttocks; a photo of a smiling soldier kneeling next to a detainee strapped down near the floor; a photo of a naked prisoner hanging upside down from the top of a bunk bed; a picture of a soldier who appears poised to punch a shackled detainee; and pictures of what appear to be the corpses of prisoners.
These photos are believed to be among those the president said this week he does not want released out of concern that doing so could put U.S. soldiers at risk, though that cannot be confirmed.
In discussing his decision, the president claimed the photos in question “are not particularly sensational, especially when compared to the painful images that we remember from Abu Ghraib.”
According to the reliable sources, some of the –thousands- of unreleased photos reportedly show “military guards threatening to sexually assault a detainee with a broomstick and hooded prisoners on transport planes with Playboy magazines opened to pictures of nude women on their laps.” The American Civil Liberties Union has sued for the release of up to 2,000 photos.

One picture shows a prisoner hung up upside down while another shows a naked man smeared in excrement standing in a corridor with a guard standing menacingly in front of him. Another prisoner is handcuffed to the window frame of his cell with underpants pulled over his head.
The types of torture perpetrated around the world are many and range from overt physical assaults to insidious psychological terrorization. Among our patients, the most commonly reported forms of physical torture, in order of frequency from highest to lowest, are beatings, prolonged deprivation of food or water, blows to the head, restraint in painful positions, rape, and electrocution. The most commonly reported forms of psychological torture, in order of frequency, are imprisonment under cruel inhuman conditions, threats/verbal abuse/humiliation, and being forced to witness the torture of others.

What could be worse that Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo? …you might be sorry you asked, The United States has another secret prison Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. 500+ prisoners, some having been there for 3 years without access to lawyers or family, never even hearing what crime they have been charged with. Reminds me of the Spanish Inquisition.

“Photo of a detainee held by the United States, tortured with his face wired, his lips sewn shut, red eyes and torso sacked. The facial wiring is clearly non-medical. In many other photographs what appears to be twine has been used to suture large wounds on inmates bodies. Anyone reminded of Nazi experimentation? These photographs were found on a US military computer network and were recently leaked.
